Awbury Arboretum

Home of the State Champion River Birch!

This 55 acre Philadelphia arboretum dates back to 1852 and is a fun place to explore and view different types of trees and plants in a variety of environments. Stop by the wetlands or the meadow, view excellent examples of trees such as River Birch, American Linden and more. 

 

Awbury contains historic Cope House which was built by a ship owner in 1852 as well as several other fascinating examples of historic 1800s homes. Events take place regularly, year round - check their calendar to find out when garden tours, summer field studies, historic talks and more are scheduled. One of the few arboretums in Philadelphia, the Awbury Arboretum is open to the public year round. Admission is free.

Bartram's Garden

Oldest Botanical Gardens in North America!

This historic garden is the oldest surviving botanic garden on the continent. Set on 45 acres of park land, meadows, wetlands and wildlife habitats, the thousands of plants found in Bartram's Garden are a delight to see. Illustrious persons such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were visitors to these historic gardens.

 

When you visit, be sure to see the wildflower meadow, the historic botanic garden of American native plants, the scenic river trail, and the stone house and farm buildings that were home to John Bartram more than 250 years ago. Jenkins Arboretum
