The Metropolitan Museum of Art opened on April 13, 1870 and acquired its first object, a Roman sarcophagus. A year after that the museum gained its collections with 174 European paintings, including works by Anthony van Dyck, Nicolas Poussin and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. For art enthusiasts, visitors can enjoy some cool things to do here by observing the works of art from history right in New York.

 

Now, the museum has seventeen separate curatorial departments, with permanent collections from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, paintings and sculptures from European masters, to an extensive collection of America and modern art.
